Home of the Pittsburgh Penguins
Before there was PPG Paints Arena, before Sidney Crosby, before Mario Lemieux — there was the Igloo. The Pittsburgh Civic Arena opened on September 17, 1961, as the world's first major arena with a retractable roof, a stainless steel dome so distinctive in shape that it inspired the name of the hockey team that would call it home. When Pittsburgh was awarded an NHL expansion franchise in 1967, the nickname "Penguins" was chosen in direct homage to the building's igloo-like silhouette. For 43 years — from October 11, 1967, to May 12, 2010 — the Igloo was one of hockey's most iconic homes. Mario Lemieux scored four goals in the 1990 NHL All-Star Game on this ice. Back-to-back Stanley Cups were won by teams forged inside these walls in 1991 and 1992. Sidney Crosby made his NHL debut here in 2005. The Beatles, Elvis, and countless other legends played to sold-out crowds under that unforgettable dome. Demolished in 2012 after 51 years of Pittsburgh history, the Igloo lives forever in the hearts of Penguins fans. This tribute replica honors one of hockey's most beloved buildings — gone but never forgotten.
