They called it "The Joe," and for 38 years it was Hockeytown's cathedral. Joe Louis Arena opened on December 27, 1979, along the Detroit River, named for the heavyweight boxing champion who grew up in the city — and it became every bit as legendary as its namesake. The Red Wings arrived at The Joe in the midst of lean years, then transformed into one of the NHL's dynasties, appearing in six Stanley Cup Finals (1995, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2008, and 2009) and winning four championships on The Joe's ice. The 1987 NHL Entry Draft — the first ever held in the United States — was staged here. Gordie Howe's final NHL All-Star appearance captivated 21,002 fans in February 1980. The famous octopus-throwing tradition became synonymous with this building's playoff atmosphere. Unlike most modern arenas, The Joe never carried a corporate name, a point of fierce local pride. When the Red Wings won their last game here on April 9, 2017, a city wept. The Joe was demolished to make way for Little Caesars Arena, but its legacy — four banners, five generations of legends, and the roar of Hockeytown — endures forever.
