Known affectionately as "The Dean Dome," the arena opened on January 18, 1986, and fittingly launched its legacy with No. 1 North Carolina defeating archrival No. 3 Duke 95-92 in a nationally televised showdown. Named after the legendary Coach Dean Smith himself — who would go on to amass a staggering 133-17 home record in the building bearing his name — the arena stands as a living tribute to one of the greatest coaches the game has ever known. With a capacity of 21,750, it is one of the three largest on-campus basketball arenas in the nation, and the Tar Heels have ranked in the top five nationally in home attendance every year but one since the building opened.
