Opened September 29, 2000, to welcome the newly established Minnesota Wild — bringing NHL hockey back to the state after the North Stars departed in 1993 — the 17,954-seat arena in downtown St. Paul immediately became one of the finest hockey venues on earth. ESPN named it the best overall sports venue in the U.S. in 2004. The Wild sold out an astonishing 409 consecutive games in their first nine seasons, a testament to a hockey-mad fanbase that had been waiting seven long years for the sport's return. The arena sits along the Mississippi River, connected to the RiverCentre complex, and has hosted the NCAA Frozen Four four times (2002, 2011, 2018, 2024), the 2008 Republican National Convention, and the NHL All-Star Game in 2004. Every spring, Minnesota's legendary high school hockey tournament — one of the most passionate prep sports events in America — fills the building to its 20,500-plus capacity. The Xcel Energy Center isn't just an arena; it's proof that in the State of Hockey, the sport runs deeper than anywhere else on earth. This arena was renamed Grand Casino Arena in September 2025.
